At only 22, Hazel Wood, purchased her first home at Redrow’s The Mulberries development in the Essex town of Witham. Leaving school at 16 to complete an apprenticeship, Hazel saved for two years to afford her deposit.
Commenting on her journey to homeownership, Hazel said, “When I first started looking at houses to purchase in January 2018, I thought I would need to save for a few more years as everything on the market where I could see myself living was out of my price range. Then I came across The Mulberries and it immediately seemed perfect for me, plus I could afford it!”
With the Government backed Help to Buy scheme available it meant Hazel could access the Government’s 20% five year interest free loan and only needed to raise a 5% deposit to purchase her one bedroom apartment at The Mulberries.
“Witham has a very similar vibe to Maldon, where I grew up too”, says Hazel, “It is a lovely quaint town with lots of nice shops and independent family run restaurants. The town is ideal for me too, as it’s only a 10 minute drive into Chelmsford where I work at a financial services company and there is also a train station nearby (which I sometimes even walk to and from!) for those days I don’t want to drive to work or for heading into London at the weekend.”
Using help to buy Hazel purchased her £198,000 one bedroom apartment with just a £10,000 deposit. Hazel commented, “I had heard about Help to Buy before and thought that it sounded great. It meant that I could purchase a home a bit earlier than I thought possible. Ideally, I would have liked to purchase a larger property, but you can obviously only borrow so much for a mortgage and my one bedroom apartment is easily affordable month to month. The sales team down at The Mulberries were excellent in guiding me through the Help to Buy process and made sure any queries I had were responded to immediately. I was really impressed at how prompt and informative they were.
“If I did look to move in a few years’ time I would definitely consider staying at The Mulberries as I really like the location and the houses that are being built look lovely. Plus the customer care at Redrow made purchasing my new home so easy I don’t mind doing the whole process again.”
Government figures released in August revealed that more than 420,000 people have bought a home using Help to Buy, whilst 365,400 first-time-buyers just like Hazel have used the scheme to jump onto the property ladder. To date, 86% of customers at Redrow’s development in Witham have been able to buy a home thanks to the Government backed scheme.
Hazel is one of the first to move-in to The Mulberries but has found that Redrow’s welcome party really helped to create a sense of community. “Before we moved in, Redrow organised a welcome party so I got to meet all my neighbours before I picked up my keys. I think that was really helpful as it means I know who I am living near and if I did have a problem I would feel comfortable knocking on my neighbours doors.”
Help to buy is available on all new build homes up to £600,000. By receiving a 20% equity loan from the Government and with a 5% deposit, buyers only need a 75% mortgage.
Redrow is delivering 750 homes at The Mulberries on Hatfield Road. The Mulberries, and its second outlet The Junipers, currently offers a choice of three, four and five bedroom bespoke homes.
