Having poured money into rent for over a decade Nikki Corcoran and husband Liam used the Government’s Help to Buy scheme to purchase their own home at St George’s Place, the Hopkins Homes development at Sprowston in Norfolk, and find some stability for their young family.

Nikki said: “After 11 years of renting I hate to think how much money we put into to someone else’s house. When our landlord put the house on the market, we decided to take the plunge and use our money for a home of our own.

“Originally I was drawn to older properties but was interested to see what we could afford through the Help to Buy scheme. We visited St George’s Place and were pleasantly surprised by the size and style of house we could afford for a mortgage payment very similar to what we had been paying in rent.”

Securing stability was also a major factor in the couple’s decision to buy. The couple have three young children, the oldest of whom is autistic. Nikki, who works as a development worker for the Norfolk SEN Network, said: “There was always a worry with renting that the landlord would ask for the house back. This happened to us a couple of times and it was very hard for the children, particularly my older son, to understand and accept. We started our househunt with the future very much in mind; to be able to say to the children with certainty that this will be always be our home made a huge difference to us and to them.

“We chose a three-bedroom townhouse which has a bedroom with ensuite on the first floor which is ideal for our older son, giving him is own space as he grows up. It also has a study on the ground floor which we use as an additional bedroom.

“Although the development is still in progress our home is located away from the current activity so it has very little impact on our daily life. Our house looks out over a grassed area which is a lovely space for the children to ride bikes or play.

“This is also ideal for our new puppy. My autistic son has always wanted a dog but our landlord didn’t allow us to have one. Since moving in to our new home we have been able to get a puppy who we all adore and is my son’s constant companion.

“I’m also excited that we will be within five minutes’ walk of the new primary school which is being built, all being well our youngest will be able to attend when she’s old enough.

“The buying process was very straightforward. We used the mortgage advisor Hopkins Homes recommended for a Help to Buy mortgage and the sale went through without any hiccups.

“Shaun in the sales office helped us through the whole process, he was always willing to show us around and answer questions. We never felt he was trying to close a sale, just that he genuinely wanted us to find the perfect home for our family, and we feel we have done just that.”

Shaun Tate, sales consultant at St George’s Place said: “I was so delighted when Nikki, Liam and the children were able to move in to their new home. It’s such a big moment in people’s lives, particularly when, like this family, the move will have such a big impact on their well-being, providing stability not to mention allowing them to add a gorgeous puppy to their household.”
